Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

I teach an Extended Transition class at Paul B. Stephens School in Clearwater, Florida, which is part of the Pinellas County School System.
I hope to use this grant to renew my single user license for the N2Y Unique Learning System Transition Grade Band learning platform.
The Unique Learning System (ULS) Transition format is designed specifically for students with varied learning needs and cognitive levels. It combines differentiated, standards based content and assessment tools, with interactive lessons, real world scenarios, and hands on activities delivered using Smart Board technology. These features promote student engagement and participation. I hope to use this technology, supplemented with teacher created lessons and activities to prepare my students for independent living and success in the work place.

What will be done with my students

I will use the ULS program to provide meaningful daily instruction in different areas of adult living. These include but are not limited to personal safety, personal hygiene and health, financial management, independent living, social skills and competencies, independent living, money and shopping skills, household management and maintenance, job searches, interviews, applications, resumes, references, community involvement, rights and responsibilities, and transportation use and safety. This will also include instruction in self-advocacy and self determination.
Finally, I will use ULS to provide instruction in valuable employment soft skills such as communication, professionalism, team work, positive attiitudes, problem solving, goal setting, critical thinking, and social awareness.

Benefits to my students

By using the differentiated lessons, materials, and activities provided in the ULS program, all of my students will have access to this curriculum and be able achieve success which in turn will build their confidence.
Presenting lessons and activities on the Smart Board will allow my students opportunities for movement and to participate in hands on activities which will increase student engagement and interest.
Student work product and built-in assessment tools will allow students and teachers to monitor and track their progress in different areas of instruction.
Since most skills instruction is recurring from month to month, students will have multiple opportunities to practice, review, and scaffold learning

Describe the Students

My students are all students with cognitive disabilities of varying degrees. and varying exceptionalities. They all have IEPs and have met the requirements to receive a standard diploma on ACCESS points but are all deferring receipt of their diplomas to continue FAPE services through the year they turn 22 and to participate in the Pinellas County Schools Extended Transition program. I have students diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities, Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Other Health Impairments.
