Goal
To purchase 200 copies of In the Wild Light to give away to students at Brandon High School so that we may read the book together. Teachers, students, and admin participate in a whole school book club and discussion.
What will be done with my students
This novel deals with current issues of identity, poverty, mental health, drugs, and loss. Reading a book in community helps create reading enjoyment and a deeper connection to both the text and the people who are also reading. This helps us build a school community. As we read together we will discuss the issues by looking at what literally happens in the book, how that connects to other texts and our global world, how it connects to our lives, and based on the discussions, what we feel called to do.
Benefits to my students
Increase reading enjoyment for all students, specifically marketing to our lowest level readers. Increase students' ability to make meaning from text and to connect to text.
Increase community building between teachers, students, and admin who are all reading the same book.
Budget Narrative
The list price for the one novel is $12.99 but with the volume and county discount of 35%, the per item cost is $8.44. There is no tax or shipping since it is for school. We can buy and give away 236 copies for students and teachers to share with this grant.
