Goal

Our goal for this school wide project (including students, staff and possibly parents) is to create tile mosaic signs displaying our school motto: The Mustang Way: Respect, Responsibility and Honesty. Each class will work together on this collaborative project to create a message and a beautiful piece of art for public display.

What will be done with my students

Students will create hand-made clay tiles, sort glass tiles, cut and glue tiles learning the process of mosaic art to make three-character signs for our school. Students and staff will have a part in the making of the signs.
Curriculum includes paper mosaics, collage work and individual compositions. This project will focus on collaboration and how everyone is part of a bigger piece of art. The idea of the mosaic theme is deeply embedded into the culture of our school. Our motto is: The Mustang Way: Respect, Responsibility and Honesty which is taught to all grades with relevance throughout the day. This project timeline will be for the 2023-24 school year. This is a one-time project.

Benefits to my students

The idea of the mosaic theme is deeply embedded into the culture of our school. Our motto is: The Mustang Way: Respect, Responsibility and Honesty which is taught to all grades with relevance throughout the day.

The expected outcome for this project includes students learning the process of creating a large mosaic piece of art for public display, students working together as a team throughout the process, and for students to have an understanding that art can have a message.

My hope is to have all Oakhurst students and staff participate in this project. I will work with individual classes and would also like to host family nights for parents to participate.

Describe the Students

We have ESE, ASD, and General Ed students attending the visual arts program at Oakhurst Elementary from kindergarten through fifth grade. Within each class/grade academic performance ranges from low to high. With such a diverse population we have accommodations in place to support students in reaching their highest level of potential.
