Goal

The goal is to expose students to the wonderful world of ladybugs. Ladybugs are unlike other animals and many students don't realize they go through a metamorphosis. We want the students to watch them transform before their eyes, but also expose them to ways they can learn in other areas with the help of ladybugs.

What will be done with my students

The students will get to watch the life cycle of ladybugs! The ladybug land will allow the students to see the growth of ladybugs from larvae, to pupa, to ladybugs. While this transformation is happening, we want them to be immersed in ladybugs. We are asking for ladybug activities to use in reading and math. There are amazing center activities which include matching upper to lowercase letters, counting centers where the students match the number of spots on a ladybug to a number, an activity where they match ladybugs to a number on a leaf. The last center is for the students who are exceeding expectations and are able to do addition with ladybugs. These centers will be used to suppliment the learning that is taking place in the classroom and standard based.

Benefits to my students

The students love learning new things and to have an experience where they get to watch an animal go through metemorphasis is like nothing else they may ever see! The students will see the life cycle first hand while getting hands on experience with ladybug activities. It will instill a love and apprciation for the animals and the world around them, while at the same time realizing that things they learn about in science can be used to support reading and math.

Describe the Students

Our students come from a varity of different backgrounds. In total, there are 54 students in kindergarten. We have some who are ESE for speech and language, while others need academic and behavioral support. Additionally, we have ESOL students as well as many different cultural backgrounds. The best thing about our students is that they are all curious and wanting to explore the world around them.
