Goal

The goal of this literacy grant project is to allow students to read and analyze previous Caldecott Award winning books.

What will be done with my students

In the age of short attention spans, student engagement has never been more important. This grant will encourage student's to read award-winning books that will lead to higher engagement with a variety of genres and subjects - leading to a richer reading life for students.

Benefits to my students

Independent reading for pleasure [wide appeal due to the variety of books]
* Increase access to variety of genres [encompassing a diverse range of styles, themes, and target audiences]. Currently approximately 80% of students are reading simply-structured fiction with limited themes or diversity; this initiative will increase the diversity of students' reading life and thus allow for more students to read diverse stories across a variety of genres.
* Improve reading fluency through variety of Lexile levels [levels range from 400L to 1200L]. Students currently read an average of a 500-600 Lexile level which is below the standard for 5th grade. By having exposure to high-interest books at higher levels will allow the average student to increase their ability to access higher level text.
* Students will be exposed to a variety of multicultural representations [as an IB candidate school - this is critical for our students]
* Cultivate student's ability to analyze literature [understanding Artistic Techniques and Themes, Critical Thinking & Interpretation, Comparison & Connection]
