Goal

The theme of our school this year is “Champion Elementary School: Where Learning is Out of this World.” To celebrate this, our K-2 students will perform the musical “Journey Into Outer Space” in the spring of 2024 for our school’s community. The goal of this project is to acquire the materials necessary for our students to transform themselves into aliens, astronauts, and space-traveling musicians.

What will be done with my students

Students will learn and perform the musical “Journey Into Outer Space,” created by Quaver Ed, our district’s elementary music curriculum. Students in this musical will either be cast as aliens, astronauts, or budding astronomers. Since we do not have any space-related costumes or props in our school, I will be responsible for acquiring all of our necessary materials before we begin.
Students will sing, play percussion instruments, and present spoken dialogue from memory in the show. (MU.K.S.2.1 - Sing or play songs from memory.)
Students will perform songs from various genres, including rap and folk, within the musical. (MU.1.H.1.1 - Perform simple songs, dances, and musical games from a variety of cultures.)
Students will identify their individual role in the show and understand how everyone contributes to the overall performance, no matter how simple or complex their part is. (MU.2.F.2.1 - Describe how people participate in music.)
Students will participate in creating their own costumes and accessories for the show and will evaluate whether or not their costumes positively represent the part they are playing. (MU.2.F.3.1 - Collaborate with others in a music presentation and discuss what was successful and what could be improved.)

Benefits to my students

Young students aren’t just learning what eighth notes are and how to hold their mallets properly – they’re learning how to cooperate with each other while also learning how to improve their skills independently. They learn how to support each other when things get complicated, and they learn how to express themselves in a safe and welcoming environment. By wearing something fun and novel and unique, it helps transport them to a place of wonder and imagination while they get to show off their newfound skills and performance technique. If these materials can be given to us, I don’t have to worry about asking parents to pay for this. I can remove that barrier for entry and allow more students to participate in the show. These costume pieces are versatile, too, and will be wonderful additions to our school’s inventory.

Budget Narrative

I am hoping to purchase three item sets for the three character types, as well as several rolls of aluminum tape to use on multiple costumes and on other stage props, décor, and instrument accessories like drum sticks. The alien headbands come with glasses that have removable lenses, in case they are too reflective for the stage lights. This particular astronaut helmet says “Blast Off” on the top, which is the title of one of the best songs in the musical! The metallic shirts are perfect for space wayfinders, and they can be kept at school and used again and again in future performances.
