Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

In our school this year, we are focusing on the health and well-being of our students as well as our teachers and staff. I am hoping to expand our materials related to dynamic, cardiovascular-friendly drumming routines – otherwise known as “cardio drumming.” I will incorporate some of our favorite cardio drumming routines into our winter concert in December and continue to use these routines throughout the school year with all students.

Goal

In our school this year, we are focusing on the health and well-being of our students as well as our teachers and staff. I am hoping to expand our materials related to dynamic, cardiovascular-friendly drumming routines – otherwise known as “cardio drumming.” I will incorporate some of our favorite cardio drumming routines into our winter concert in December and continue to use these routines throughout the school year with all students.

What will be done with my students

The materials I am requesting will be used by all of the students at Champion, from our 4 year olds in VPK to our 5th graders preparing to enter middle school music programs. Students will learn cardio drumming routines at various levels, appropriate to their grade level, and students in grades 3-5 will perform several of them in our winter show this December.
Students will practice their individual parts and perform them as part of a larger ensemble. (MU.3.F.3.1 - Collaborate with others to create a musical presentation and acknowledge individual contributions as an integral part of the whole.)
Students will discuss proper body alignment, posture, muscle activation, and cardiovascular health and think about how these things are important for their physical well being as well as their musical performance. (MU.4.H.3.1 - Identify connections among music and other contexts, using correct music and other relevant content-area vocabulary, and explore how learning in one academic area can help with knowledge or skill acquisition in a different academic area.)
Students will learn to create their own rhythmic patterns using the cardio drumming materials. (MU.2.S.1.2 - Create simple ostinati to accompany songs or poems.)
Students will use their whole body when performing their drumming routines and will experience tactile and auditory shifts in the rhythmic patterns. (MU.5.F.1.1 - Create a performance, using visual, kinesthetic, digital, and/or acoustic means to manipulate musical elements.)

Benefits to my students

Heart health is one of the most important aspects of everyone’s health, no matter how young or old we are. At Champion Elementary, we are very dedicated to the Kids Heart Challenge every year through the American Heart Association. Our students diligently raise money and awareness for heart health, and adding in more opportunities for health-focused musicianship is yet another way our kids can prioritize their physical well-being alongside their artistic well-being.

Budget Narrative

I am hoping to purchase three item types for our cardio drumming supplies – foam noodles, large exercise balls, and buckets to put the balls in. Ordinarily, cardio drumming is done with weighted drumsticks to give the user more resistance for a better workout. In our case, foam noodles are a more appropriate substitute since kids of all ages can successfully use them, and they can be used corporally as body percussion without any fear of injury.
