Goal
To teach students in grades K-5 how to calm down at their desks when they are feeling anxious with breathing skills and tactile fidget tape textured sensory strips called “Calm Strips” for their desk.
What will be done with my students
SS.K.CG.2.2
Students will identify examples of responsible decisions.
One example of a good decision is to calm down when one is feeling anxious. Students will practice breathing skills by using a Tactile Fidget Tape Textured Sensory Strip placed on their desk to use without needing to move from their desk.
Benefits to my students
Anxiety is an emotion in which one feels irrationally tense, worried, or fearful, manifesting itself through physical or emotional symptoms. While there is frequently a known stimulus, there may not be. The term “anxiety” is often confused with or casually used in place of stress or nervousness, but they aren’t the same things. Stress and nerves are usually caused by external, recognizable stimuli, and the responses are relatively rational and short-lived. These feelings can even be positive, indicating that a person cares about a situation’s outcome and pushing them to succeed. However, if a stressor continues over an extended period or there are multiple nerve-wracking situations on top of one another, anxiety frequently develops.
While not all anxiety symptoms are signs of disorders, there are three general causes of anxiety disorders among young people which are biology, family and trauma. With biology, sometimes the neurotransmitters, especially serotonin and dopamine, aren’t working properly in their brains. In the case of family, the child might inherit anxiety, or a parent may model it. The third cause of anxiety could be trauma. Trauma could be in the form of a divorce or a death in the family.
One-way counselors can help students with anxiety is by teaching them to breathe with an object they can use at their desk and focus on. One idea is to use Calm Strips. Calm Strips are sensory adhesives that can help with anxiety, fidgeting and body-focus repetitive behaviors. They are water resistant, easy to clean, and come with breathing directions. The strips come in 2 different textures, Soft Sand and River Rocks. Soft Sand is a subtle, grainy texture, while River Rocks is more bumpy and less uniform or smoother than Soft Sand. River Rocks texture is ideal for anyone looking for a more robust texture. Soft Sand texture is ideal for those individuals looking for a gentle sensory experience, perfect for scratching and picking. Both textures are gentle on skin and soothing to the touch.
Budget Narrative
The cost is to cover the Calm Strips in various shapes sizes and colors that will be appealing to students.
