Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of the team is to create a throwback day for math and science once a month. Students will complete a variety of activities to assist with reinforcing current fifth and fourth grade benchmarks. We want to give students a hands-on interactive experience that will fill in any learning gaps. Our goal is by using a variety of hands-on activities, students will be more engaged in learning and we will be able to reinforce the benchmarks in math and science.
Here is a list of the benchmarks we need to focus on this school year:

What will be done with my students

Students will work to complete math activities in groups based on data from the VBA. They will review previously taught benchmarks from 4th grade and use that prior knowledge to make connections with the 5th grade benchmark. Students will rotate to different centers in the classroom with a focus on a specific benchmark. During the rotations students will complete activities using questions from the 5th Big Ideas textbook with a twist to solve puzzles, word problems, and critical thinking skills to answer questions. There will be a game or brain break activity to do once they have completed the activity. The teacher will rotate around the room to monitor student responses like they would do in their regular class. By making the textbook come alive with interactive team activities students will become excited about solving problems and their level of engagement will increase.
In science our goal is to have additional hands-on activities. Student took the VBA 1 and we were able to with the data collected see where our schools deficits are. Students struggle with many of the Earth benchmarks. With the additional supplies our activities for star patterns and moon phases can gain a more in-depth understanding about how electricity flows. We have additional resources we can purchase items to use with the hands-on activities for space, nature of science, water cycle, matter, force and motion and the other standards to prepare students for the FSSA in May.

Benefits to my students

In math students will complete activities that focus on specific areas of opportunities. Each station will have questions related to a specific benchmark. With benchmark NSO.1.5 rounding students will hold single digit number cards to create a problem and then round to the number on the card the drew from the deck. Students will work together in groups having students holding up the number card of what they are rounding while others from the group tell them how to move the cards to solve the problem. Once completed they will check the answers to verify if they are correct. Another rotation will have a larger than life line plot that students will use to plot real world data. These are just some of the examples we will use to reinforce the math benchmarks.

For science we will use materials to have all students create the different phases of the moon with modeling clay. Another benchmark the students scored low on was star patterns and movement across the sky. We will use have AIMS worksheet and will need metal tags to have the map hold in place to their journals. We would also like to purchase additional science tools for students it use in rotations to gain a better understanding of the nature of science benchmarks. By having these hands-on activities in both math and science, students who need that visual aid will have that additional support. Teachers will be able to monitor the students and check if they are identifying the correct information to support their findings. This information can then be used to drive instruction in the classroom.

Budget Narrative

The cost for all items requested have been found at their lowest possible price points on either Amazon or Walmart. To save the materials and directions, the activities will be laminated to ensure their longevity through this school year.
