Goal

To engage students and their families in hands-on Science, Literacy, Art, and Physical Education activities that connect back to their classroom learning in an environment that builds relationships between children, families, educators, and the community.

What will be done with my students

It’s Chilly, Silly, and Really, Really Educational- WINTER FEST 2024!!! Last year we served well over 350 people (students and their families) in this community event, and we are hoping to serve even more in Year 2. Our night features Science experiments, Literacy activities, art projects, fitness games, and festival fun. This year, back by popular demand, we are Making Snow and Exploding Snowmen. (Don’t tell Frosty!) (SC.4.N.1.1 Investigations, SC.5.P.1 Phys. & Chem. changes) We will “light up the night” with our circuit lab featuring salt, copper tape, graphite, and standard circuits.(SC.5.P.11.1 Electricity/circuits) Last year we learned about Blubber, and how it protects artic animals. This year, we want to test what is more efficient against the cold... fur or blubber? Which do you predict? (SC.5.L.17.1 Comp & Cont Animal Adaptations) We'll also race penguins... on ice...with magnets! (SC.4.P.8.4 magnets attract/repel each other) What about literacy? We’ll explore the wintery worlds of "Snowmen at Night" and "The Mitten" in our Book-and-a-Craft Stations. We will make snowman lanterns and a hedgehog in a mitten. We will also "Give a Mouse a Cookie" (ok... everyone gets some) at our Book-and-a-Snack station.(ELA.2.R.1.1 Character, Plot; VA.3.S.3 Purposeful practice, skills, techniques of Art) Can you navigate our obstacle course... with a snowball in a spoon? We’ll find out in this year’s version of the Winter Olympics. Win a gold medal, if you make it to the end! (PE.2.M.1 Movement Competency) To add to the festivities, the Dolphin Beats will perform, and Destiny, the Dolphin (Blue Lake’s mascot), will make guest appearances, along with Elsa and Olaf. There will be budget-friendly dinner options and the Book Fair. Finally, the hit of Winter Fest is the snow flurry machines! Will you join us under the snowy sky and twinkling lights on Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 5:30 to 7:30?

Benefits to my students

Laughter and Learning are Powerful Partners. We are providing fun, funny, engaging, hands-on, educational experiences that students share with their families, friends, and education team. We hope to host over 300 children, plus their families. This evening creates a strong sense of community among all our school's stakeholders, as 30+ faculty & staff members, their families, the PTO, local businesses, churches, DeLand High ROTC, and DeLand Police Explorers join together to produce this epic evening. Every child leaves with visions of stories and science dancing in their heads, a new book of their very own, snow in their pockets, memories captured in art projects, and a heart filled with JOY. Every educator leaves feeling plugged into the heart of education... the part of our job that really matters. Resources from the evening go immediately back into the classrooms to benefit all students. The event gives each classroom Pre-K thru 1 a copy of the evening's titles to commerate the event.

Budget Narrative

Every item is to be used hands-on by children in the evening's activities, with exception to the duct tape, which will secure parts of the obstacle course. The books will go home with students, except for hard copies which go to classrooms. Any leftover supplies from experiments or crafts will be sent to appropriate classrooms.
