Goal

Our goal is to create positive, engaging, meaningful learning experiences for all students. By incorporating robotics into Math and Science lessons, we are able to deliver instruction in a way that will engage today’s student, while also giving them the opportunity to increase their coding, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.

What will be done with my students

Dash is a kid-friendly programmable robot that that instantly engages students as it as it moves, lights up, and makes sounds. Students code Dash using a free app. It will be used weekly with students as part of math, science, and social skills lessons to give opportunities to collaborate on real-world problem-solving challenges.

Benefits to my students

These materials will be shared with the entire school, allowing 60 students to engage in collaborative STEM activities that foster creativity, problem-solving and joy for learning. Dash will allow students to engage in higher-order thinking tasks that combine real-world 21st century skills with math and science content in a way that is both meaningful and memorable.

Describe the Students

Richard L. Sanders School (RLSS) is a public, (K-12), exceptional student education (ESE) center, serving students with disabilities (i.e, students with severe behavioral and/or mental health concerns). A notable percentage of the student population is designated as homeless or in foster care and enter RLSS with documented mental health services and involvement with additional outside support agencies. Accordingly, RLSS is a designated title I center and 100% of its students receive free/reduced prices lunch. Approximately 85% of the students are male.
