Goal
We would like to provide opportunities for our entire 3rd grade level to practice math and reading content while moving their bodies and having fun collaborating with peers.
What will be done with my students
We are asking for certain types of sporting/recess equipment and other supplies that will help students practice various learning standards across the content areas of Math and Language Arts. This will be done several times a week throughout the school year.
Teachers will teach procedures for each activity and as the weeks go by change the content for the game. Our team of teachers will collaborate to develop as many meaningful uses for these materials as we can!
Standard recess equipment and other materials will be used for kids to practice all types of skills. Here are some of our ideas:
Balls and jump ropes for bouncing in between skip counting, reciting multiples of numbers, spelling words using focused phonics patterns and more.
Hula hoops can be used to create Venn-Diagrams to compare and contrast texts by different authors on the same topic, sort facts and opinions, important details from unimportant details. spelling patterns and more.
Velcro dart boards can be used for rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing, etc.
The possibilities are endless! Some of the 3rd grade Florida BEST Standards that we will target are:
R.3.3 Compare and contrast how two authors present information on the same topic or theme.
ELA.3.V.1.1: Use grade-level academic vocabulary in speaking and writing.
ELA.3.C.2.1: Present information orally, in a logical sequence, using nonverbal cues, appropriate volume, and clear pronunciation
ELA.3.R.2.2 Identify the central idea and explain how relevant details support
that idea in a text.
ELA.3.V.1.3 Use context clues, figurative language, word relationships,
reference materials, and/or background knowledge to determine the
meaning of multiple-meaning and unknown words and phrases,
appropriate to grade level.
ELA.3.F.1.3 Use knowledge of grade-level phonics and word-analysis skills
to decode words
MA.K12.MTR.1.1 Actively participate in effortful learning both individually and collectively.
Mathematicians who participate in effortful learning both individually and with others
MA.K12.MTR.2.1 Demonstrate understanding by representing problems in multiple ways.
MA.K12.MTR.4.1 Engage in discussions that reflect on the mathematical thinking of self and others
MA.K12.MTR.7.1 Apply mathematics to real-world contexts.
Benefits to my students
Students will benefit from varied practice of Math and Language Arts skills. They will also enhance their own speaking and listening skills as well as get their bodies moving. This grant will support 6 teachers and 120 students.
Kinesthetic learners will love the opportunities for movement, auditory learners will appreciate the dialogue that the activities inspire. Kids who learn best by reading and writing will also benefit from the activities that we will develop if this grant is funded.
Budget Narrative
The items listed above are available on Amazon. They will be used for creative opportunities for the 3rd grade students at Spruce Creak Elementary to practice a variety of language arts, math and speaking and listening skills.
