Goal

My goal is to get students more engaged with the process of making connections between ideas/sources (in essay writing) and in and in analyzing/writing/utilizing the three basic appeals--ethos, logos, pathos--from Aristotle's rhetorical triangle, which are fundamental to both argumentative writing and in rhetorical analysis.

What will be done with my students

BEST STANDARDS:
Understanding Rhetoric—ELA.11.R.3.4: Evaluate an author’s use of rhetoric in text.
Narrative Writing—ELA.11.C.1.2: Write complex narratives using appropriate techniques to establish multiple perspectives.
Argumentative Writing ELA.11.C.1.3: Write literary analyses to support claims, using logical reasoning, credible evidence from sources, and elaboration, demonstrating an understanding of literary elements.
Expository Writing—ELA.11.C.1.4: Write an analysis of complex texts using logical organization and a tone and voice appropriate to the task and audience, demonstrating an understanding of the subject.
Researching and Using Information—ELA.11.C.4.1: Conduct literary research to answer a question, refining the scope of the question to align with interpretations of texts, and synthesizing information from primary and secondary sources.
USING TRIANGLES/CIRCLES: Rhetorical Analysis: As we annotate literature, we will use our triangles to trace and identify (label) the author's appeals. We will use our circles to identify context and label the primary parts of the rhetorical situation--speaker, message, audience. Students can use the same elements to plan what they will include to make their argumentative writing more persuasive. USING HEXAGONS: Developed by Betsy Potash, hexagonal thinking is an activity designed to get kids thinking critically, making novel connections, debating, and providing evidence to support their reasoning—by visually connecting a series of ideas written on paper or digital hexagons around a theme.
We will use these when planning essays and analyzing texts to map connections and explore relationships between ideas (claims, evidence, commentary).

Benefits to my students

Manipulatives can be key in providing effective, active, engaging lessons. They help students learn by allowing them to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning. My students will begin to "see" the connections between texts and the relationships between sources, especially those from multiple perspectives. They will be engaged in the process of "putting together" the parts of the essay (according to connections), thus improving the line of reasoning in their writing. They will also be able to "see" the relationship between the three appeals--ethos, logos, pathos--with the three important aspects of the rhetorical situation--message, speaker, audience.
