Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this grant is to continue to bring to life the imagination of my students. Our class is primary gifted (K-2). Some of the most enjoyable activities we participate in throughout the year involve our 3-D printer. The printer, however, was purchased in 2018 and despite several upgrades and loving care is no longer functioning. The goal of this grant would be to replace our 3D printer in order to continue our classroom activities. We have a small classroom that is constantly growing. This project will continue to benefit students in years to come.

Goal

The goal of this grant is to continue to bring to life the imagination of my students. Our class is primary gifted (K-2). Some of the most enjoyable activities we participate in throughout the year involve our 3-D printer. The printer, however, was purchased in 2018 and despite several upgrades and loving care is no longer functioning. The goal of this grant would be to replace our 3D printer in order to continue our classroom activities. We have a small classroom that is constantly growing. This project will continue to benefit students in years to come.

What will be done with my students

Students are able to earn 3D-printed items in our classroom. In addition to our school-wide PBIS program, students earn classroom tickets for meeting the Panther Expectations of Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Cooperative, and Be Kind. These tickets are then used to purchase items from our classroom store. The store is usually stocked with items I purchase myself, but one of the more popular items students like to purchase is their choice of a 3D-printed item. Also, after Spring Break, students are allowed to design their own item for printing from using the TinkerCad platform. This grant will continue this in our classroom, as it is a wonderful way for students to connect not only their positive choices to positive outcomes but learn interesting technology as well.
There are number of standards associated with this type of learning. The often-overlooked Florida Computer Science Standards would be the most appropriate. These standards are designed to prepare students to be successful in our digital world. For example, SC.K2.CS-CS.1.1 Define simulation and identify the concepts illustrated by a simple simulation.
SC.K2.CS-CS.1.2 Describe how models and simulations can be used to solve real-world issues in science and engineering.
SC.K2.CS-CS.1.3 Describe how models represent a real-life system.
SC.K2.CS-CS.1.4 Solve questions individually and collaboratively using models.

Benefits to my students

This will benefit my students in a number of ways. First, students are able to be rewarded for positive behavior choices in a unique and interesting way. Moreover, the 3D printer in our classroom allows students to use their imagination and gives them more personal investment in making those positive behavior choices. Students are also introduced to new technology and able to learn the beginnings of a new skill.

Budget Narrative

The reason I selected this particular model of printer is because it is enclosed. With young children, I find it important for them to be able to see the printer in motion but be safe from accidentally touching something hot. We have classroom expectations in place, but another layer of safety is always a benefit.
