Goal

For students to safely calculate their individual limits (targeted heart rate) during aerobic exercise. It is recommended that students exercise within 55 to 85 percent of their maximum heart rate for at least 20 to 30 minutes to get the best results from aerobic exercise.

What will be done with my students

There will be lessons taught in Science classes on cardiovascular health and targeted heart rate (SC.912.L.14.36), measuring heart rate (HE.912.C.1.3) and the respiratory system (SC.912.L.14.39).
Students will have the opportunity to monitor their heart rate during various opportunities/activities in our fitness room and outside court area as an extension to our Science lessons taught in class

Benefits to my students

For students to get the most from their activities/workout while staying at a level that’s safe for them and to monitor how hard their heart is working. Students will learn that incorporating physical activity on a daily basis they will experience positive health benefits and be on the path for a better future. Regular physical activity can produce long-term health benefits. It can help reduce stress and depression, reduce disease, control weight, improve heart and lung function, provide for better sleep and give more energy.
Studies show that physically active students score higher on standardized tests and have better grades, particularly in math, English and reading. Recess and classroom activity breaks show positive association with indicators of cognitive skills, attitudes, and academic behavior and achievement.
