Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this grant is to increase student understanding of the properties of matter and increase student achievement on state FSSA exam so that students will have a deeper comprehension of the following standards (which have previously been lower performing standards): SC.8.P.8.4: Classify and compare substances on the basis of characteristic physical properties that can be demonstrated or measured; for example, density, thermal or electrical conductivity, solubility, magnetic properties, melting and boiling points, and know that these properties are independent of the amount of the sample and SC.8.N.1.2: Design and conduct a study using repeated trials and replication.

What will be done with my students

Students will perform hands-on investigations into the properties of a variety of important materials, including solids and liquids, to determine the impact density has on buoyancy (the ability to float in different liquids). Utilizing the density cubes, students will explore solids that have the same volume, but different densities. They will calculate the density of different substances based upon their own measurements and explain why some cubes float and others do not, even though they are the same size. Students will use the density of spheres kit to explore the impact of the density of different liquids on the ability to float. This line of experimentation deepens the understanding they form related to mass, density, and composition. This set of investigations will solidify the information they learn about solids and enhances it with new information about liquids. This grant will purchase a set of two types of kits with materials for each of the 14 middle schools.

Benefits to my students

Students will have the opportunity to perform hands-on experiments with materials that are not currently available at their schools. Students will all have the opportunity to explore the properties of matter in greater detail. Teachers will participate in a professional training to receive these materials, allowing teachers to have a deeper understanding of the content and the common student misconceptions, which will allow teachers to better support student comprehension and success.
