Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

I have two goals for this project. My ultimate goal for this project is to teach 4th and 5th grade students the life skill that is sewing.
My second goal (also very important), is to receive the funding to provide the school with two sewing machines, for learning purposes.
Sewing and tailoring is unfortunately an art form and career that is not as popular as it was years ago. With this, the skill has been less and less used- and many people have lost the knowledge of how useful basic sewing knowledge can be. With working at a Title 1 school, I noticed a lot of students had broken things- torn clothing, bags, and more. I have had students come to me for help in repairing their bookbags, a dress, and more. It has been my hope that I can at least teach them how they can make the repairs on their own, if needed for their futures. It is also a skill that I want to provide-in case this sparks an interest in a future career path for some students.

I have two goals for this project. My ultimate goal for this project is to teach 4th and 5th grade students the life skill that is sewing.

What will be done with my students

This project will be implemented during the latter part of the year, with the sewing machines-however, I will begin teaching the basics of sewing in the first semester. In the first semester of school, I will teach students the process of hand sewing. They will be able to create something small that they may take home. The included photo for this grant request is of some of the small felt sewn products students created last school year in our fourth and fifth grade sewing club. In the second semester students will be taught how to use a sewing machine, and will create something on a larger scale. They would first be taught in a small group on the safety expectations required for use, and how I will be overseeing their using the machine. Then they will each practice a simple stich on fabric in a straight line, before starting their own project. They will have to plan out what they want to make, have it approved, create a pattern using measurements, have it approved again, and then with my overseeing their machine use-sew on the machine.
The sewing machines, pins, bobbins, and needles will become a permanent part of our school community-and a huge part of the art program at Champion. The thread, fabric, and chalks will be consumed and need to be replaced with time and use. I will personally ensure that the machines are maintained during my time at Champion.

The benefits of sewing is a fantastic cross-curricular activity. It is an art form that includes a lot of precision and measuring.
Below are the 5th and 4th grade standards pertaining to this project.

5th grade:

LAFS.5.SL.1.1- Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on other ideas and expressing their own clearly.
(This standard will be used when communicating ideas and planning patterns).

VA.5.S.1.4- Use accurate art vocabulary to communicate about works of art and artistic and creative processes.

VA.5.S.3.3- Use tools, media, techniques, and processes in a safe and responsible manner.
MAFS.K12.MP.5.1- Use appropriate tools strategically.

4th grade standards:
VA.4.S.1.4- Use accurate art vocabulary to discuss works of art and the creative process.
LAFS.4.SL.1.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

VA.4.S.3.3- Follow procedures for using tools, media, techniques, and processes safely and responsibly.
ELD.K12.ELL.SI.1- English language learners communicate for social and instructional purposes within the school setting.
VA.4.F.1.1- Combine art media with innovative ideas and techniques to create two-and/or three-dimensional works of art.

VA.4.F.3.2- Collaborate with peers in the art room to achieve a common goal.

MAFS.K12.MP.5.1- Use appropriate tools strategically.

MAFS.K12.MP.6.1- Attend to precision.

MAFS.K12.MP.7.1- Look for and make use of structure.

VA.4.C.2.3- Develop and support ideas from various resources to create unique artworks.

VA.4.F.2.1- Discuss how artists and designers have made an impact on the community.

VA.4.F.1.2- Examine and apply creative solutions to solve an artistic problem.

------

Students will be required to plan, make lots of measurements, work towards precision by sewing a minimum of two pieces of fabric together-as evenly as possible. Additionally, when facing a problem, students will be asked to collaborate with one another to attempt to find a solution, and if viable we can test the solution to determine if it can solve the problem.
Students will create their own product which may be shown at a community and/or school based art show, the product then being able to be brought home by the student as well.

If time and materials permit, we can work collaboratively on a project that may also be an excellent school wide project for students. (Example-if every child were given a square of fabric to decorate, we could piece them together to make a collaborative tapestry/quilt to display at the school).

Benefits to my students

Students will learn an incredibly valuable life skill, which can be applicable and useful throughout their entire life.
Sewing can be useful for making repairs on their own items, creating something new and innovating, and pursuing future career goals involving that can involve working with textiles.
Learning to sew is also beneficial to their social skills. It is not the easiest skill to learn-but I have seen my students who are learning to sew grow in confidence in their abilities, and then reach out to help other students improve in theirs.
Furthermore, this project can help encourage future community projects that can show Champion's students how we can sew to help others. Example: sewing blankets for local hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters, and more.
