Goal

My students will be introduced to the culture and world of ballroom dance and cultivate important social and emotional skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

What will be done with my students

My students are active and creative! They come from diverse cultures and love to sing, dance, and listen to and play music. They have, however, not learned how to dance with a partner, and would love to learn!! Last year, we tried to learn dance from videos. This year, I would love for my students to have trained and skilled dance artists from Dancing Classrooms to assist them in learning ballroom dances. Dancing Classrooms is a 10 week program 2X per week. My students and I will learn social dances over the course of the semester, including the Merengue, Foxtrot, Rumba, Tango, Swing, and Waltz. Our teaching artists will work with each teacher to integrate Dancing Classrooms topics with a wide range of standard educational subjects, including reading, writing, math, social studies, geography, music, physical education, and visual arts.

Benefits to my students

The beauty of this program is that while my students will be learning ballroom dancing, they are also learning more about self esteem, respect, manners, teamwork, and so much more. The program ends with lessons 19 and 20 in a "Culminating Event" where my students will perform their dances for their parents, friends, and school community!
