Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this project is to provide students with a hands-on experience in learning about plants that directly relate to the science standards for their grade level. This project will benefit the whole school for many years. The hope is to get students out of the classroom learning in the garden so that the information is better retained. Part of the garden will be plants to aid in science learning and the other part will be herbs and vegetables to promote living with the land, healthy food choices and showcase how to harvest and prepare those foods.

What will be done with my students

All students will have access to the garden boxes in our garden area. Each grade level will have their own box with plants that are designed specifically for them based on their science standards.
• 1 garden box for every grade level
o Kindergarten- a touch garden so that they can be as hands on as possible
o First Grade- a touch garden so that they can be as hands on as possible
o Second Grade- Florida Native and Non-Native Plants
o Third Grade- Florida Native and Non-Native Plants
o Fourth Grade- Flowers such as Lilies and Hibiscus plants that are easy to dissect and have very visible reproductive parts
o Fifth Grade- Flowers such as Lilies and Hibiscus plants that are easy to dissect and have very visible reproductive parts
• 1 Garden Box for each Garden Club
o Each Garden club (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) will have their own box to showcase what they learn and grow during the time in their club.
o We are hoping to implement an herb garden as well as other fruits and vegetables so the students can participate in tasting what they grow. This will also teach students about the importance of healthy eating and nutrition.
o A salsa garden that grows everything needed to make salsa.

This will help them see their standards come to life whether it be differentiating between flowering and nonflowering plants, dissecting a flower into its male and female parts, or identifying Florida Native or nonnative plants. The possibilities are endless.

Second Grade
SC.2.L.16. Heredity and Reproduction - A. Offspring of plants and animals are similar to, but not exactly like, their parents or each other. B. Life cycles vary among organisms, but reproduction is a major stage in the life cycle of all organisms.

SC.2.L.17.2. Recognize and explain that living things are found all over Earth, but each is only able to live in habitats that meet its basic needs.

Third Grade
SC.3.L.14. Organization and Development of Living Organisms - A. All plants and animals, including humans, are alike in some ways and different in others. B.
