Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The Environmental and Social Justice Quilting Club empowers students to use textile art to come together to raise awareness of local and national issues affecting our communities in the Tampa Bay area. As a middle school educator who teaches reading, it is my goal to teach students not only the important skill of sewing but to tap into their creativity and critical thinking skills as well. Quilting is a skill that allows students to work with their hands and minds and provides important tactile input as well. It increases communication and literacy skills as well.

What will be done with my students

The ESJQC aims to empower students to use textile art to express themselves and the social/environmental issues they care about. The club provides a community and safe environment for students to learn a life skill - sewing, while also fostering their critical thinking and communication skills. Students will use textile art to to empower themselves and those around them. Many students benefit from hands on learning experiences and this club provides a positive and hands on/tactile learning environment for students to explore their creativity and the environmental and social issues that move them.
Students will meet weekly throughout the school year and the start up costs will benefit students over multiple years. This club ties into multiple curricula - from ELA BEST Standards for communication to IB standards to community engagement.

Benefits to my students

The ESJQC club helps middle school students grow as critical thinkers, artists, and advocates. Students will create textile art to be incorporated in a community quilt that will be exhibited at school or may be featured in quilt exhibitions nationwide.
