Goal

My goal with this grant is to help my students becoming confident readers. The majority of my students have English as a second language and coming into 2nd grade at least a grade level below. I will help them learn to read through a phonics-based instruction. As they develop as readers, they will develop as writers and lifelong learners!  

What will be done with my students

With this project, I will be able to give my students the hands-on experiences, as well as the concrete learning experiences. My students will have daily practice with the language kits and also opportunities to learn through collaborating with their peers. This grant will be utilized throughout the year and pieces will be used throughout the coming years. This year we are beginning a new phonics instruction curriculum, UFLI, and with these kits, I will be able to incorporate the current reading curriculum with the new phonics program.  

Benefits to my students

I expect to have all 40 of my students exceed a year's growth. Most of my students are coming to 2nd grade on a kindergarten or early first grade level, which is significantly below level. We all work together very hard throughout the whole year to help my students grow and be prepared for third grade! 

Budget Narrative

The items listed will be purchased and utilized immediately upon approval of the grant. The journals, dry erase, and paper are consumable items. The remainder of the items will be able to be utilized in future years.
