Goal

The goal of Hydration Motivation is to increase student achievement in reading by keeping students hydrated while motivating them at the same time. The human body is more than 50% water. When students stay hydrated it help increase their memory. Having cool stickers to slap on the water bottle will motivate students to keep meeting their weekly reading goals.

What will be done with my students

Students in 7th grade intensive reading will receive a water bottle for meeting their first weekly reading goal. This will allow students to have immediate access to water in the classroom. Students can earn stickers to decorate water bottles from the classroom sticker store. Each week when a reading goal is met another sticker can be added. Students will have the opportunity to pick out stickers to be ordered for the rewards.

Benefits to my students

At John Hopkins Middle School, students do not have access to water within the classroom. They must leave the room to get drinks from the water fountains in the hallway. Students will now have a bottle to keep filled to use during class. This will increase the amount of time on academics, as well as increase students working memory and retention of new knowledge. Dehydration can cause changes in mood, increase anxiety, headaches, and decrease the brain’s functions. One important benefit for staying hydrated is that it also helps the immune system which in turn will keep students in class more days.

Describe the Students

This project will benefit 107 students currently enrolled in 7th grade intensive reading at a Title One school. Seventy percent of these students scored at the lowest level on the FAST state assessment for reading in May 2023. Eighteen percent scored on a level two. Students scoring on a level three, four, or five are reading on grade level.
