Goal

To create a sensory garden that will double as a butterfly/pollinator garden.

What will be done with my students

The garden will be used by students in multiple ways across grade levels. Primary grades will use the garden during their units on plant growth and development, studying the five senses, as well as life cycles using butterflies.

The following standards will be covered:

SC.K.L.14.1 Recognize the five senses and related body parts.

SC.K.L.14.3, SC.1.L.14, SC.2.L.14, Observe plants and animals, describe how they are alike and how they are different in the way they look and in the things they do.
A. All plants and animals, including humans, are alike in some ways and different in others.

B. All plants and animals, including humans, have internal parts and external structures that function to keep them alive and help them grow and reproduce.

C. Humans can better understand the natural world through careful observation.

SC.1.L.16, SC.2.L.16,
A. Offspring of plants and animals are similar to, but not exactly like, their parents or each other.

B. Life cycles vary among organisms, but reproduction is a major stage in the life cycle of all organisms.

SC.1.L.17, SC.2.L.17
A. Plants and animals, including humans, interact with and depend upon each other and their environment to satisfy their basic needs.

B. Both human activities and natural events can have major impacts on the environment.

C. Energy flows from the sun through producers to consumers.

Intermediate will take part in helping care for and maintain the gardens and may be used as a social emotional space if they are in need. This is in addition to the following standards that will be covered:

SC.3.L.14, SC.5.L.14
A. All plants and animals, including humans, are alike in some ways and different in others.

B. All plants and animals, including humans, have internal parts and external structures that function to keep them alive and help them grow and reproduce.

C. Humans can better understand the natural world through careful observation.

SC.3.L.17, SC.4.L.17, SC.5.L.17
A. Plants and animals, including humans, interact with and depend upon each other and their environment to satisfy their basic needs.

B. Both human activities and natural events can have major impacts on the environment.

C. Energy flows from the sun through producers to consumers.

SC.4.L.16

B. Life cycles vary among organisms, but reproduction is a major stage in the life cycle of all organisms.

Benefits to my students

What I look forward to is how all students at OBE will be positively affected be this sensory garden.

Students will have a hands-on look at plants and how they grow and develop right on campus. When studying plant development, plant parts, and life cycles they will be able to observe first hand.

Students will also have the benefits of using their senses to interact with the garden. Nature and maintaining plant care is incredibly healthy for brain development and social emotional growth.

OBE is an integral part of the Ormond Beach community. This garden would also help the community at large, providing a space for butterflies and other pollinators in the area.

Budget Narrative

The budget above is a rough estimation. We have two locations on campus that we would like to house a butterfly garden/ sensory garden. One location is in our school courtyard and would service the upper elementary students and be a usable space for science lessons. The other location would be a sensory/butterfly experience and science lesson location for primary students.

With the provided money we will purchase plants, soil as needed, materials for raised beds and large pots, as well as tools to maintain the garden over time.

Items

# Item Cost
1 Plants $300.00
2 Soil $250.00
3 Raised Beds/ Pots $300.00
4 Tools/Watering/Gloves/misc. $150.00
  Total: $1,000.00
