Goal

The goal of this project is for students to deepen their knowledge of English Language Arts argumentative skills.

What will be done with my students

Who would win this battle: Abraham Lincoln with laser eyes or a velociraptor that can use the force? High interest, and engaging questions such as this one will excite students as they participate in the argumentative process. Students will collaborate in teams to argue a position and support their claim using logical reasoning all while maintaining a formal and objective tone. Students love games and they love arguing so let’s unite these interests to improve their ability to create effective, logical arguments. Teams will plan, organize and write their arguments collaboratively. Afterwards they will share their arguments and the class will have the opportunity to evaluate them to determine who wins the prize! May the best argument win!
Florida BEST English Language Arts standards: ELA.8.C.1.3 Write to argue a position, supporting at least one claim and rebutting at least one counterclaim with logical reasoning, credible evidence from multiple sources, elaboration, and using a logical organizational structure. ELA.7.C.1.3 Write and support a claim using logical reasoning, relevant evidence from multiple sources, elaboration, a logical organizational structure with varied transitions, and acknowledging at least one counterclaim. ELA.6.C.1.3 Write and support a claim using logical reasoning, relevant evidence from multiple sources, elaboration, and a logical organizational structure with varied transitions.

Benefits to my students

Funding from this project will allow students to engage in exciting and fun ways to improve their argumentative writing, which will result in an increase in ELA Writing scores. The Argument Battles will pose high interest and intriguing questions that will excite students as they participate in the argumentative process. By making learning fun and engaging, students will remember these experiences, collaborate with others, and strengthen their knowledge at the same time.
