Goal

The goal of this project is to allow all of the students at our school access to deepen their science knowledge by providing a safe and enjoyable outdoor learning space. 

What will be done with my students

Our school has been blessed with great open green spaces on our campus. Our teachers often use this space to read outdoors, conduct science investigations or work on math problems while enjoying the beautiful Florida weather. However there is no designated seating for students to use while they are outside, as a result most work is done sitting on the concrete sidewalk or avoiding ants in the grass. Research has shown that outdoor learning can have huge benefits on student mental health and academic performance. Students are often calmer and better able to focus when learning in nature, and teachers have reported better behavior and social interactions with fewer disciplinary issues. My goal is for the outdoor learning classroom to become a relaxing place for students to grow their science knowledge in the most hands-on way possible! My students come from a rural area where a majority of them live below the poverty line and have not had the access to a variety of life experiences. 

Benefits to my students

This grant will provide the necessary materials to establish a new school outdoor learning classroom. These materials will be available to impact many future years of students! If we are able to build this space it will last for about 7-10 years. This space would be open for all of our 750 students to use ranging from pre-k to 5th grade all year round.  

Budget Narrative

Items to be purchased include- student seating, a portable whiteboard, a shed to house all materials
