Goal

My goal is to encourage conversation and communication within the family. Parents can take the time to teach certain life skills such as winning or losing gracefully and create a sense of belonging and understanding that is extremely necessary in this digital age.

What will be done with my students

This grant will allow my students to connect with their parents on a different level. Middle schoolers are entering the unknown with puberty, friendships changing, and extreme changes within their friend group as they move into class rotations with different teachers as opposed to the simplicity of elementary school.
The Family Backpack will contain board games, and Conversation Starters to get students and parents to open up a line of communication. The students will be able to borrow the backpack in a "check out" system similar to a library and will return it one week later. Parents and students will need to complete reactionary questionnaires or surveys detailing the games they played, who won, if conversations were meaningful and what effect they had on the family.

Benefits to my students

We recently experienced a terrible hurricane in our community of Marco Island. A lot of our student's homes endured flooding and some lost everything including their games and toys. This has created a lot of stress for our students and families, and while we know they will eventually rebuild, the stress is wearing on the families. I believe getting back to simpler times of playing games as a family can bring some lightness and fun to a tense atmosphere.
Also, the other reason I want to do this project is because of a conversation I had with one of my 7th-grade students who has been self-harming. I had given her the task of communicating with her parents as she is often alone with her cell phone and on social media. She mentioned to me that I was the first adult she has ever been able to have conversations with without feeling angst while doing it. I asked her about her parents and to tell me how they met...she has never felt she could ask such a simple question. I asked her what she missed and what life was like prior to self-harming, and her response was she was lonely. Although she has siblings older and younger and both parents in the home, everyone was always preoccupied and didn't talk to each other. I have this idea to try to encourage more banter in the home and something as simple as a game of UNO can re-open those doors of communication.

Budget Narrative

The total cost for 4 family backpacks will be $937.90.
All of the games allow for communication and using emotional intelligence and encouraging social and emotional skills. Allowing teens to talk about their thoughts and feelings, their friends, and themselves, and learning how to connect past and present events to open up the chains of communication in the family. For our kids, this is priceless!
