Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

I am a principal and my students range in age from six to eleven years old. Approximately 68% of my students are African American, 5% white, and 27% Hispanic. These students are economically disadvantaged. Most of my students don't have technology in their homes. My job is not only to teach the students how to read, but also to empower them to become lifelong readers and thinkers.

Goal

I am a principal and my students range in age from six to eleven years old. Approximately 68% of my students are African American, 5% white, and 27% Hispanic. These students are economically disadvantaged. Most of my students don't have technology in their homes. My job is not only to teach the students how to read, but also to empower them to become lifelong readers and thinkers.

What will be done with my students

Music is a very important subject in schools because it promotes brain development, increases human connections, improves grades, helps to socialize, and even lowers stress levels. It also helps students stay in school, increases motivation, improves attitudes and attendance, and improves their academic performance.

Benefits to my students

No matter where you teach or what level you teach, students enter our classrooms with life experiences that can negatively impact their learning. For some students in Title I Schools, these issues can include financial hardships, unstable housing, food insecurities, a difficult home life, or even abuse/neglect. As teachers, we must understand and acknowledge what our students may be going through outside of our classroom. It is imperative for students to know we care about them. We can accomplish this by taking time to listen to our students and support them through difficult days and situations. In many instances, we can achieve this by just being available in our classrooms before or after school so students can stop by and talk with us. With you help I would like to provide my teachers with echo dots to play soothing music as they have conversations with their students and students complete their assignments. The music will create a safe environment for all students and support with privacy amongst the individuals having the conversations. Also, teachers could use the Echo Dots for research and timers to support with other content area standards.
