Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Benito offers chorus, band and orchestra to all grade levels, grades 6, 7 and 8. In 2017, Benito received The Middle and High School music Enrollment Award by Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA). We continue to enroll 50% of the student population into the music electives offered at the school.

Due to the large number of students enrolled in our programs, we are in need of music stands. It is our goal to allow each student to use their own stand during class. Stands wear out, brake, bend and oftentimes are unrepairable.

It is essential for students to have stands to use the correct posture while performing. This allows the student to use correct form, technique and prevent any bodily injuries in the future with wrists, neck and back. It falls under the Florida sunshine standard MU.68.S.3, Through purposeful practice, artists learn to manage, master, and refine simple, then complex, skills and techniques.

What will be done with my students

Our music stands are in various stages of functionality. Our students would greatly benefit from having their own individual stands that tilt correctly and raise to the appropriate height allowing them to be able to comfortably read the music on the stand. Several of our students in each class have some learning disability. Individual music stands will allow them to be comfortable in their own space adjusting to their needs to see the music. Some ESE students in class like to have space. If they do not have to share the stands we can differentiate better and provide flexible groupings. They will be able to write notes on their music sheet that will help them be successful. Highlighting music with different color coded highlights can help a visual learner but be distracting to another student. Each music class has approximately 8-10 students that require special accommodations.

Music stands are used every day, every period by all students in the music program. There is a lot of interest in our music programs and having functional stands will allow us to add students into the program, learning the proper way to read music and balancing an instrument, making it comfortable, and not frustrating for the student.

Benefits to my students

These stands are built to last! The stands will provide my students with an essential way to connect with their music for many years to come and will allow for students to enjoy small group practice, peer mentoring, etc.
