Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My goal with this grant is to expand the instruments that our school band offers, specifically to provide ESE students with instruments that suit their individual needs for inclusion in the band program. The instruments fall into Florida standard MU.68.S.1, The arts are inherently experiential and actively engage learners in the processes of creating, interpreting, and responding to art.

These instruments are needed equipment to play concert music and offer softer sounds for our ESE students. Without the instruments, we can not play concert music sheet the way the composer intended for the music to be played. Without the instruments, we can not offer ESE students with certain disabilities that can’t hold a band instrument the enrichment in class to strike an auxiliary instrument and be fully integrated into the band program.

What will be done with my students

Benefits to my students:
At the school over 50% of the student population are enrolled in musical electives. We offer band, orchestra and chorus. The instruments requested in this grant can be used across the music classes. On average we have 6 students from the ESE program attending each class. For some ESE students, this class is the only fine arts credit that fits their needs. Some students do not have the mobility to hold or blow into an instrument and require an instrument they can strike. Percussion instruments are instrumental in creating an atmosphere in the music as the composer intends to convey in their piece. The ESE students are therefore fully immersed in the success of the band program. At music festivals such as MPA, if those instruments are not present in the music, the band can not receive full credit for the song.

If granted, these instruments will expand the percussion section of the band. ESE students will now have the opportunity to be part of the whole band group experience, receiving instructions in a whole group setting. It also provides me as a teacher the opportunity to work in a small group with the percussion section and for the students to do peer tutoring. These instruments offer differential learning in the classroom.

The instruments allow the ESE students to have access to a wider variety of instruments and the ability for each student to have access to their own instrument. Some of our students require extra space and percussion instruments lend themselves well to allow a student their individual space. The music curriculum encourages students to compose music. The students can do a solo or original work and the percussion instruments add additional tone to the music. To see my students progress and thrive by developing their skills in music, rhythm and friendship is powerful.

Benefits to my students

I expect my ESE students to be essential contributors to the band program by allowing their abilities to shine. I expect them to learn to take care of their instrument. I expect them to practice with their section and in the band as a whole group. By participating, they will be actively engaged in the process of creating, interpreting and responding to art as dictated by standard MU.68.S.1. My goal will be measured through classroom observations and performances at musical events.
