Goal

With this project, our goal is to be able to deliver appropriate differentiated instruction to our 56 students that will be attending our self-contained units at Summerfield Elementary.

What will be done with my students

Every student will be using age-appropriate, standards-aligned instruction at their right level of support from Kindergarten through 5th grade, addressing every core subject, as well as life skills. Unique Learning Systems (ULS) meets a wide range of needs with research-based differentiated instruction delivered with a scaffolded approach for developing skills, making new levels of achievement possible, thus preparing our students for their state alternate assessment and life. During the school year 2021-2022, with the funding provided by HEF and having ULS, our students had the opportunity to be exposed to something as simple as a recipe (Science) while teaching them life skills in a way that was accessible since we have verbal and non-verbal students.

Benefits to my students

With this project we expect to give students meaningful access to learning and develop greater self-sufficiency. As teachers, we will be able to personalize instruction to boost each learner’s growth and administrators have the resources to better maintain compliance and making sure every student is being served as per requested in their IEPs. The impact ULS has in students is amazing, with the grades from their FSAA, students who were exposed to this curriculum showed an increased of 10 points in the areas of reading and writing; and an increase of 5 points in the areas of math, as shown in their scores. Some students were able to increase their achievement level by 1. Also, ULS is accessible through a Smartboard and our students who present mobility limitations or deficient motor skills were able to access the curriculum just like any other child.
