Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

As a math coach in a Title 1 school where 85% of our students are economically disadvantaged, I want to provide our students with the same quality instruction other, more affluent schools have access to. I want to give the teachers at Kingswood Elementary the resources and training needed to deepen our students number sense and close the gap on their unfinished learning which occurred due to circumstances schools have faced over the past few years.

Goal

As a math coach in a Title 1 school where 85% of our students are economically disadvantaged, I want to provide our students with the same quality instruction other, more affluent schools have access to. I want to give the teachers at Kingswood Elementary the resources and training needed to deepen our students number sense and close the gap on their unfinished learning which occurred due to circumstances schools have faced over the past few years.

What will be done with my students

"The best way to develop fluency with numbers is to develop number sense and to work with numbers in different ways, not to memorize blindly without number sense."

With all the instruction lost due to Covid, many students are lacking in basic numeracy or number sense understanding which is foundational to mathematics success. Through this grant, I would like to purchases resouces to support teachers in closing the gap as well as materials to build the ability to think about numbers flexibility for students.

When students understand basic math facts rather than just memorize them, they are able to buildy fluency on a much deeper level that they can then apply in future learning.

Benefits to my students

The overall outcome of this grant is to build math number sense and ultimately build mathematical success for the students at Kingswood. I hope to accomplish this by working with our teachers and students to increase our students ability to think flexibly about numbers. Through effective strategies and teaching, I also hope to see improved student performance and test scores.
