Goal

The Burnett Middle School Media Center is venturing to build a makerspace that supports our foundational literacy goals. The library will not only be a space for children to read a diverse collection of fiction and nonfiction text but also provide a space for them to tell their own stories in a variety of genres.

What will be done with my students

The virtual storytelling tools provided in the makerspace will demystify literacy by having students create their own fiction and nonfiction stories. We will use the NanoWrimo writing platform to organize ideas and draft stories. Students will finished drafts to publishing software in the genre of their choice. It may be poetry chapbooks, short fiction, novels, essays, short documentary via film or podcast, animation, narrative photography.

Benefits to my students

As students rotate through the library and on their own time during lunch, we will build an anthology of student work that will be availabe to the wider community to read or view as a display.
In partnership with the media specialist and literacy department, students will develop their craft as writers. Using the books in the library as models and the publishing tools in the makerspace, students will develop a comprehensive literacy toolkit.
Students who've workshopped and revised stories will participate in quarterly readings and may also submit their writing to the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards in December.

Budget Narrative

The digital recorders will be used for students to record narratives and/or interviews for their podcasts or audio storytelling. The Vlogging camera will allow students to build narrative photography projects. The iPad, the Creative Cloud, and Procreate subscriptions will allow students to access tutorials (as an added layer of support if they are not with media specialist) and build anination, editing, and publishing skills.
