What will be done with my students

Students greatly need to capacity to express themselves through the written word. Fluency is something over 80% of my students struggle with when reading.Through repeated readings of the text, my students will increase sight word vocabulary and the ability to decode words quickly and accurately. In addition, the repeated readings allow students to use appropriate sentence phrasing, read punctuation markers, and read with greater ease. Our students need a Poetry Café Day to perform their poetry to become more fluent and literate readers.

Benefits to my students

Students will write and create a selection of original poems through a writing workshop. Students will then be paired with a peer for fluency purposes to read aloud. As students create a gained sense of fluency, students will perform for a larger student audience during the school day at our poetry café.
