Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this project is to administer premium differentiated instruction using portable laptop computers in small groups within the classroom. This will allow us to create a substantial opportunity for significant growth regarding our bottom quartile math gains. Our school has had a challenging time raising our bottom quartile math scores. Third grade is a critical year for future success in elementary mathematics as the students are expected to master multiplication, division, comparing fractions as well as multi-step word problems by the end of the year. Future grade levels build upon this expectation.

What will be done with my students

We are an inclusive school which means most teachers have a wide variety of students including students with disabilities, students who are learning the English language and our county curriculum at the same time, gifted students as well as students from many diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Using these portable laptops in small groups will benefit our lowest scoring 25 percent students regardless of who they are, where they come from or what disabilities they face in an academic environment.
The teacher (me or my infused ESE specialist) will meet the individual needs of each student using the vast array of online academic assets, programs and websites the county and the internet has to offer. Using assistive technology in small groups will benefit the students as we will be able to better meet the demands of the bottom quartile students using these laptops by tailoring instruction to their specific individual needs. Many students are not excited about subjects in which they struggle. These laptops will also benefit the students by putting the MOTIVATION back in MATH!

Benefits to my students

I not only expect a year's worth of growth in math from each student in our bottom quartile, but I also expect significant gains from all students. Most important, I expect each child to gain or regain the love for math once they see that what they set their mind to, they can achieve. With the help of this project, they will learn the life lesson that shooting for the stars really does pay off!
