Goal

Our goal in Ms. Carpenter's Class is for each and every one of our 1st grade students to be on reading level or ABOVE by the end of the year!!

What will be done with my students

Students read leveled texts individually, one on one to the teacher and some, in small groups on a daily basis.

Benefits to my students

My students will have the ability to read interesting, culturally diverse, leveled "just right" texts throughout the entire year! Leveled readers are used on a daily basis to not only provide vital sight word support but fluency practice as well as to build reading comprehension. Primary years are extremely important in building a strong literary foundation! Each student is provided 3-4 books, once or twice a week, and switched out as needed. Some of our students switch out quite often and may soon need more books. On the other hand, many of my lower and struggling readers need more books on their individual levels to support their academic needs.

With these materials, my group of learners will receive additional individual support no matter what level they are on in order to maximize potential growth. As my students grow and increase in knowledge, the leveled readers can continue supporting that growth. We also want to continue making reading FUN and peak interest! Providing a diverse collection of leveled readers on a wide array of topics would certainly educate but spark the minds of my young readers,

Describe the Students

Due to covid restrictions, I currently have 15 students and will most likely receive more throughout the year. Out of my 15, I have three ESE students, all of which initially tested on a preschool level in reading. We are working hard to build confidence as well as skill! I have seven other students who also tested at either preschool or Kindergarten levels while five other students who remain on, or above grade level.
