Goal

To support cultural diversity in STEM awareness and engagement, in order to encourage students of diverse backgrounds to learn about STEM fields, with an emphasis on Math and Science.

What will be done with my students

Each of our 31 classrooms, K-5, will be provided with a set of books focusing on diversity and diversity in STEM subjects, focusing on math and science.
Teachers may choose to read books aloud to students and students may borrow these books from the classroom library. Teachers may also choose to include one of these books in a morning meeting or restorative circle during the school day. Most importantly, children will be exposed to engaging math and science literature highlighting successful STEM professionals with diverse backgrounds.

Benefits to my students

Diverse books are incredibly important, especially for children who are looking to see their own lives reflected in literature to know they are not alone, and also to introduce new thoughts and ideas so they know there is so much more to our beautiful world. They need to see successful scientists, mathematicians, and inventors of diverse backgrounds to know STEM fields are accessible to individuals of all races and genders. Having diverse, STEM focused literature available to students will give all students an opportunity to get excited about Math and Science. This will hopefully translate into deeper engagement in Math and Science curriculum which will, in turn, make all students more successful in these subjects, and generate a love for STEM topics.

Describe the Students

My students are culturally and academically diverse. We are a Title 1 school with 100% of our students qualifying for Free & Reduced Lunch/Economically Disadvantaged. Of the 547 students, we have 179 whose attendance fell below 90% and 124 students scored a Level 1 on FSA (state assessment).
Our black students and students with disabilities (ESE) scored significantly lower on the Math and Science state assessments than white students.
Our ELL and Hispanic students also scored lower on the Math and Science state assessments than white students.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting 5 copies of each book title so that each grade level teacher will have a collection of culturally diverse, STEM focused books, with a concentration on Math and Science. Each collection of books will be housed in each classroom library in a special basket, specifically for this special collection of books.
