What will be done with my students

Over 600 students from across the district will participate in a series of civil rights lessons which includes reading "Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom". As a part of the lessons they will have an opportunity to enter an essay contest with a prompt related to civil rights activism. On the day of the Unity Walk they will have an opportunity to have a Q & A with author and civil rights activist Linda Blackmon Lowery. After the discussion, students will march in a unity walk with all of the other public high school students in a ceremony hosted by the mayor of Clearwater. At the walk the winning essays will be announced and read with the winners being awarded a scholarship.

Benefits to my students

The Civil Rights Ambassadors of Clearwater High School are developing a district wide civil rights event that will encourage other students in the district to engage in civil rights education. This event allows students to research and participate in experiences that will connect them to the impact the Civil Rights movement had in the United States and encourages them to participate in volunteer opportunities to make a positive impact in the community around us. The intent of the event is to recognize key people that have stood for equality or human rights, celebrate their impact, and inspire others to continue their work.
