Goal

Provide high interest books and incentives to encourage reading over school breaks.

What will be done with my students

This program will benefit the students at our Title I school by providing high interest books for reading over breaks (Winter holiday, Spring Break, Summer). We know reading during school breaks helps fight loss of reading skills. The key to the program's success is giving kids books they want to read.

This grant would provide enough books to cover any losses that may occur when students borrow books over school breaks. In addition, students who complete a graphic organizer that identifies point of view, interprets a character's perspective, and utilizes plot elements to retell a story will be given ear buds as a reward when they turn in a completed organizer with the book. LAFS.6.RL.2

Benefits to my students

-Increased enthusiasm for reading as a summer activity (by providing high interest books requested by students)
-Decrease in erosion of reading skills over school breaks
-Increase student participation in reading programs by allowing students to select the books for the Read-cation program.
-Increased book circulation
-Increase accessibility to our existing audio books by providing ear buds
