Goal

Students need to have hands on opportunities to create and perform music. Simply listening to music is not engaging, and going to concerts gets expensive. Through the purchase of a
classroom set of baritone ukuleles, the students will have the opportunity of exposure to an instrument with a versatile reportoire.

What will be done with my students

Initially, students in grades three through five will learn basic techniques of playing the ukulele. (Involvement by other grade levels may be added in subsequent years.) The instrument is student friendly, and also an excellent tool in enhancing fine motor skills in early to later grades. Students who want to continue in the string family can easily switch to guitar later as the string coordinate to the top strings of the guitar.
The project will be implemented through the purchase of 40 barintone ukuleles. This number of instruments will cover current class sizes (the current music room has double classes each period), and allow for possible growth in some grade levels.
Each grade level will benefit through having hands on experience with these instruments.

Benefits to my students

The students will learn the stages of learning to play the instrument. These will include open strings, basic notes, and chords. Students as early as third
grade will be able to play simple songs rather quickly with success. Eventually, advanced students will be able to accompany songs in our annual concerts.
Students will not only learn the stages of learning, but also have to practice, listening, and learn to be patient. These are also aspects of musicianship that can only be learned with a hands on approach.

Budget Narrative

This will purchase 40 Rogue Baritone Ukeleles for classroom use. The list cost of the Ukelele is $49.99. To buy 40 at this price through Musiciansfriend.com (which provides free shipping) we will come to $1999.60. This is a high estimate, as they are often on sale for $39.99- which would bring the price down to $1599.60.
