Goal

Having a mentoring program at Avalon Elementary School will provide one-on-one relationships to students. Through this special relationship, mentors provide advice and support and serve as role models for struggling students. Challenges facing those being mentored include problems with schoolwork, social issues, family problems or tension, and other typical difficulties of growing up.

What will be done with my students

I will identify 50 struggling students in grades K-5 who fall under the following categories and could benefit from a mentor:
Economically disadvantaged;
Special education;
Limited English Proficient students (also known as ELL-English Language Learners) and students with behavioral issues.
Mentors will be Avalon staff members who volunteer to meet with students regularly. Our mentoring program will include monthly activities to foster the mentoring relationship.

Benefits to my students

Enhance learning opportunities for students
Encourages staff involvement
Offers a relationship and guidance
Improved attendance
Higher grades
Positive feedback from teachers, parents, and staff
