Goal

Through the use of Magna Tiles, Imagination Builders, Crystal Building Blocks, Rainbow Pyramid Stacks, Translucent Magna Builders and a Light Table, my kindergarten students will be able to design and build structures in small group and independently.

What will be done with my students

After reading a story to students, they will be given the opportunity to design and build a solution to a problem in the story. Can they create a structure to help the Gingerbread Man get across the river and not rely on the tricky Fox? Can they help the Three Billy Goats Gruff get to the meadow without using violence? How about Little Red Riding Hood, how can then help her get safely to grandma's house? What about those silly pig? , can my students build them a house that can't be blown down?

Benefits to my students

I believe this will impact their comprehension skills, problem solving skills, and their ability to work cooperatively to get a task done. They will need to analyze a problem and use critical thinking skills to create a solution. Through the use of science, technology, engineering and mathematics they will be able to deepen their understanding of the rich literature that we read on a daily basis. This is a way for all of 40 students to be successful regardless of their language barrier or economic status. This will be something that we can use with each upcoming kindergarten class, so it will impact more than just the 40 students we have this year.

Describe the Students

I co-teach with a wonderful kindergarten teacher. Between the two of us, we have 40 energetic and inquisitive students. Almost 3/4 of them qualify for free lunch. For 11 of them, English is not their first language. Three of them receive special education services. One third of our class just turned 5 in the summer. Hands on activities are a must for them. Over one half of our class is not meeting expectations for our first grading cycle.

Budget Narrative

With the use of the light table as their foundation, students will use all of the items above to create and build structures. Each item is different and will present a unique challenge when it comes to actually building their structure.
