Goal

Our goal is to teach students ways to regulate their emotions and manage stress in order to be more available to learn in the classroom. As a trauma sensitive school, we strive to support all students to become more resilient.

What will be done with my students

Each classroom teacher would be provided with a "Calming" station box. The box would include a variety of fidgets, writing/drawing materials and picture directions for use, so that when a student was experiencing elevated stress that was inhibiting their ability to focus and be available to learn, they could utilize the tools and develop self-regulation skills needed to be ready to learn. School counselors would teach students and classroom teachers how and when to utilize the "Calming" station, so that students who were having difficulty coping with emotions or any trauma would have access to ways to reduce anxiety, frustration that might otherwise disrupt the classroom.

Benefits to my students

Teaching students how to regulate their emotions and take responsibility reduces disruptive behaviors that might otherwise necessitate their removal from a classroom. Students will feel more welcome in a safe and supportive classroom. Students will learn valuable social and emotional skills that will improve their ability to focus and attend to instruction, enhance positive social relationships with peers and adults, and improve their overall mental health.

Budget Narrative

Each classroom (48) would have one box with an assortment of tools for students to use. Additional supplies including laminating, colored ink for printing, notebook paper, pencils, crayons could be supplemented by teachers.
