Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of “Text to Text” is to help the students at Calusa Park Elementary improve their understanding of text by providing them with two very different articles on the same topic. One article will be fiction and the other will be nonfiction, so the information and the structure of the articles are quite different. These pieces of writing require different strategies for comprehension. As we work through the texts, the students will develop many skills such as finding main ideas and details, utilizing context clues, making inferences, finding the cause and the effect, determining the author's purpose and citing text evidence throughout their responses. These goals will create stronger and better readers!

What will be done with my students

What’s fiction, what’s fact, and how can students learn to make connections between the two? These sets contain reading folders that feature two high-interest passages about the same topic (one fiction and one nonfiction), so students can read and compare them. These passages are perfect for deepening understanding of a topic through different points of view! In addition, each folder has a reproducible worksheet to help students practice identifying genres, using text evidence to support their answers and drawing connections between fiction and nonfiction texts. There are 32 reading folders (4 copies of 8 different articles), a guide and a storage box for each grade level. The paired passages will be used throughout this year and for many years to come. My groups are flexible and I serve as a resource for the entire school, so everyone will have access to the Paired Passages. This set makes it possible for me to provide the materials on the students’ reading levels, even if they are not meeting Collier County expectations. During my group time with my students, I will be utilizing these articles in order to increase the students' skill sets. They will learn different strategies necessary for comprehension. As we work through the texts together, the students will develop many skills such as finding main ideas and details, using context clues, making inferences, finding the cause and the effect, determining the author's purpose and citing text evidence throughout their responses. I will guide the students through instruction, and then allow them to apply their new improved strategies independently. I believe this process will increase the students' reading comprehension.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to our students will be tremendous. They will become stronger readers allowing them to gain more information through various texts. My students are in the lowest quartile of achievement and are English Language Learners, so this support would be amazing. These paired texts will enhance their understanding of the reading targets and the standards. As we discuss the texts together, their verbal skills will improve, as well, especially their vocabulary. The students will become experts at using context clues to determine the meaning of new words. Through our discussions, the students will learn how to interact with different texts and become critical thinkers. The students at Calusa Park Elementary will have a wealth of texts that will improve their reading skills, give them valuable information, and engage them to read even more!

Budget Narrative

I am a resource teacher for the English Language Learners at Calusa Park Elementary. I service many students in different grade levels. Last year I helped over one hundred students and shared my resources with the teachers throughout the school. The Fiction & Nonfiction Paired Passages will become a resource for our school this year and for many years to come. Supporting this request will help hundreds of students over time. Thank you so much for considering my grant and supporting the students of Collier County.
