To provide materials for hands-on rock, mineral and fossil identification.

What will be done with my students

The study of minerals and rocks are part of the sixth grade science curriculum. The best way for our students to explore various minerals is to allow them to run tests on them to identify them. Minerals contain different properties that give them clues to what they might be such as how hard they are, if they leave on a mark on a porcelain streak plate, if they can scratch glass, etc. By purchasing these test kits, our students will be able to test many minerals and rocks and identify them all on their own using critical thinking and higher level thinking skills.

Benefits to my students

Our school currently has only 2 mineral test kits that our students must share. By purchasing these additional kits, our students will be able to work in smaller groups and I will be able to provide more assistance since they will all be able to identify minerals at the same time. Not only does this activity help in our study of minerals and rocks but it is also a higher level thinking skill since students have to be detectives to figure our what the mineral they are looking at could be based on a field guide.

Budget Narrative

Included in the mineral test kit is a streak plate, glass plate, hand lens, dropper bottle, magnet, nail, penny, and hardness scale in a ziplock bag. We will be ordering 15 kits in order for class to work with partners.
