Goal

My goal is to have a classroom that is uniquely designed for elementary math and science students that provides flexible work spaces which allow students to stand while working to problem solve in cooperative groups, if desired.

What will be done with my students

The tables would enable students more flexibility in work spaces; right now they can either sit at desks or work on the floor. With the tables raised to standing height, students would have a non-permanent work surface, or whiteboard surface which will encourage them to jot down their thinking as they solve and explore word problems. The table design is spacious enough to have several groups working around the table, so they students can display using numerous math strategies.

Benefits to my students

I see this benefiting both my high and struggling 5th grade math students. Writing directly on the table is naturally engaging to students, and the table design allows for teams of 3-4 to work collaboratively on word problems. Also, many students feel the need to work standing up, which is not only a physical benefit, but also allows for natural movement when thinking and working.

Describe the Students

My upcoming two classes are comprised of a hard-working group of 44 students with all levels of learners. There are two ESE students, 8 Gifted learners, 3 ELL learners, several very active students, and overall a bunch of great, well deserving kids.

Budget Narrative

I would love to have a total of 5 of these tables in my classroom, but ANY amount would be greatly appreciated! They are on p. 27 in K-Log 2017 catalog.
