Goal

To visit the Kennedy Space Center (NASA) to enrich our Astronomy Club experience by learning more about Space, Technology, and Engineering. This club was also designed to improve SSA scores for these students when they reach 8th grade.

What will be done with my students

Students will engage in several educational activities prepared by the Kennedy Space Center. They will spend the day exploring the exhibits, such as the Atlantis or the Gemini program. They will engage in team-building activities, meet with an astronaut, and learn about our space program first hand.

Benefits to my students

To enrich our school's science education experience, I created the 1st (and only) Astronomy Club in Pinellas County. We have been learning about the Sun, the Moon, and the planets in our Solar System and beyond all through the school year meeting every week. Students have been looking forward to visit the Kennedy Space Center since the beginning of the school year. 99% of them are Accelerated Honors Cambridge 6th graders and this club has prepared them for the 7th grade benchmarks they will take on next year. We expect the club will improve SSA scores when they reach Integrated Science Honors in the 8th grade.

Describe the Students

Students are enrolled in the 6th grade Accelerated Honors Cambridge program at Pinellas Park Middle School. Our population is over 70% financially challenged (all students receive free breakfast, lunch, and dinner). We also have a very culturally diverse population with a high percent of ELL/ESOL students. My club members are high performers with FSA scores of 3 or above.
