Goal

The goal is to provide kindergarten students an opportunity to work on devices in small groups on phonics, math, and spatial skills at centers fostering self esteem, problem solving skills, and a passion for learning. The games can be set at different levels to provide instruction adaptive to the needs of the students in each classroom.

What will be done with my students

Students will be able to use the Osmo sets on the district provided Ipads. These Osmo sets can be used for different areas of learning. Students will work in small groups or with partners to play interactive games with physical manipulatives through a digital platform. Students will be able to use letter tiles to spell out different words associated with pictures, or practice spelling word families that a teacher has created and uploaded to OSMO. In mathematics students use number tiles, and dot tiles representing numbers to develop a number sense, and compose different combinations of sums. These math games promote flexible thinking and coming up with a solution in multiple ways. Tangrams is another OSMO set included that allows students to manipulate shape pieces to match the outline puzzle developing spatial awareness skills. Additionally, the kit comes with a coding system that introduces coding at the basic level to kinder students who come to school as digital natives.

Benefits to my students

Kindergarten students will have the opportunity to engage in differentiated reading and math activities through a digital platform that is motivating and parallels the digital world in which they have grown up in. By more closely aligning Florida Standards in the setting of technology and exposing students to appropriate technological tools, they benefit from the academic learning and social skills developed around this alternative literacy or math center. Kindergarten students take great pride in developing a sense of independence, and this grant provides our youngest students to develop a life long passion for learning. Teachers can use the OSMO within their classrooms in a variety of ways to meet the needs of the students within their classes. The teacher may create different accounts for different groups to vary the level of complexity assigned within a subject. This helps to meet the needs of each learner and provides more targeted instruction on different skills.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes the purchase of 3 Complete Kits. Each OSMO Complete Kit contains the following: 2 Bases and Reflective Mirrors that can be used on two I-Pads, Tangrams, Numbers, Words, Coding, and Masterpiece (Digital Drawing), and Newton. The 3 kits would provide the 6 kindergarten classes each with their own base kit that could be used on an I-Pad and sets of games to be shared between two sets of teachers. Additional money was included to account for tax.
