Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

I desire to increase my student's reading abilities in guided reading with the impact of Literacy Footprints. Literacy Footprints provides me the opportunity to use research based lesson plans that push my students in a small group setting. First grade is a year where students are expected to make huge growth (level D to level J) and without the supplies needed this can be challenging. I want all my students to become proficient readers that can't wait to pick up another book!

Goal

I desire to increase my student's reading abilities in guided reading with the impact of Literacy Footprints. Literacy Footprints provides me the opportunity to use research based lesson plans that push my students in a small group setting. First grade is a year where students are expected to make huge growth (level D to level J) and without the supplies needed this can be challenging. I want all my students to become proficient readers that can't wait to pick up another book!

What will be done with my students

Literacy Footprints is a comprehensive literacy program, with everything I may need to teach guided reading. It comes with engaging lessons and plans written by Jan Richardson herself. Literacy Footprints is a Guided Reading system designed for classroom teachers who teach intervention, ELLs, and other primary children to read and write. Unfortunately, I am currently working in a school where I must be it all. With no other intervention help, it makes it difficult to support all of my student. The kit contains sequenced, high-quality leveled texts in a variety of genres. My students will encounter traditional tales, realistic fiction, fantasy, and informational text. The lesson cards that accompany the books follow Jan Richardson’s “Next Step” lesson format and contain strategies to enhance my lessons.

Benefits to my students

With English Language Learners in my classroom, the Literacy Footprints program includes great extensions for ELLs, as well as, engaging lessons for my general education learners. The programs integrates reading, writing and comprehension into the guided reading group. Richardson has identified the essential components of an effective guided reading lesson: targeted assessments, data analysis that pinpoints specific strategies students need, and the use of Guided Writing to support the reading process. The benefits are endless!

Describe the Students

I have a very wide range of students in my first grade class. They range from beginning readers (kindergarten level) all the way to 2nd grade reading levels. I have many cultures as well, from Vietnamese, Spanish, Bosnian, African America to Caucasian. Two of my students have come in speaking little to no English. This kit will help me with instruction to bridge the gap between the classroom and intervention instruction with minimal planning time needed.

Budget Narrative

Unfortunately my classroom does not have a high engaging guided reading library. It is very outdated. Some books only have 2-3 copies of a title, making it hard to use them in my small groups of 4 students. The literacy footprints contains 129 different titles and 4 copies of each book. The books contain vibrant colored pictures that are high interest for my readers. Each book is accompanied with a footprint lesson which would eliminate the extra hours of planning needed to complete these plans with fidelity.
