Goal

Improved student understanding and retention of the ABO/Rh blood type and compatibilities/reactions related to blood transfusion. Activity will also allow the student hand on experience with laboratory testing materials.

What will be done with my students

During Health science 1 Anatomy & Physiology unit on the blood, students will have the opportunity to actually conduct ABO/Rh testing.

This is serve to reinforce learning as well as introduce the career of bio laboratory science.

Level 3 Allied Health students working on their phlebotomy certification will also be brought into the class to assist with blood draws.

Benefits to my students

Hands on learning for the level 1 students will aid in retention and understanding. Students will read about blood typing, hear a lecture about blood typing and see pictures about blood typing and blood transfusions but with this grant students this year would then be able take learning to the next step by actually performing the bio laboratory test of ABO/Rh typing.

Benefits to level 3 students-this activity will aid them to meet their requirements of 30 venipuncture and 10 capillary blood draws. This is a requirement for certification.

Budget Narrative

Tests and anti serum to complete actual and synthetic blood tests.

Would also require biohazard waste disposal/sharps containers/alcohol/PPE (all in medical academy now)
