Goal
Currently, 69% of students in my second-grade classroom are reading below grade level based on benchmark assessments and progress monitoring data. Many of these students struggle with phonics, decoding, and reading fluency, which directly impacts comprehension and overall academic achievement. By providing the resources and structured support necessary to meet diverse reading needs, we can transform struggling readers into confident, proficient learners. This initiative will not only raise proficiency levels in second grade but also set a strong foundation for future academic succes.
Second grade is a critical year for literacy development — it is the stage where students transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Without targeted support and engaging reading interventions, these students risk falling further behind across all content areas.
Additionally, limited classroom resources and outdated leveled texts restrict opportunities for differentiated instruction. There is a need for high-interest, leveled reading materials, interactive literacy centers, and digital supports to foster engagement and strengthen foundational reading skills.
Category

What will be done with my students
The project will fund:
Leveled reading sets (fiction and nonfiction) to match each student’s reading level.
Phonics and fluency tools, such as decodable readers from district-approved sources and fluency cards created with cardstock.
Interactive literacy centers, including games, task cards, and vocabulary-building activities.
Digital literacy licenses (e.g., Lexia Core5, Reading A-Z) for personalized, adaptive reading practice.
Family Literacy Kits to send home with books, reading logs, and parent engagement guides.
Instruction will be delivered through daily small-group guided reading and weekly progress monitoring to tailor instruction and track growth.
Benefits to my students
This project will directly support student learning by:
Accelerating literacy growth: Students will receive explicit, leveled instruction and frequent practice opportunities.
Closing achievement gaps: Differentiated instruction ensures each student’s needs are met, reducing the percentage of below-grade-level readers.
Building confidence and motivation: Engaging materials and goal tracking will foster a love of reading and increase self-efficacy.
Sustaining long-term success: Improved literacy in second grade sets the foundation for proficiency in upper grades and across content areas.
Through this initiative, students will gain the tools and confidence to become independent, fluent readers — a critical step toward academic success and lifelong learning.
Budget Narrative
To support this literacy initiative, I am requesting a set of targeted instructional materials and resources designed to strengthen reading fluency, comprehension, and overall literacy engagement among my second graders. These items will directly align with the project goal of helping students achieve grade-level reading proficiency by the end of the school year.
1. Leveled Reading Sets (Fiction and Nonfiction Books):
These books will provide students with access to texts that match their individual reading levels, allowing for differentiated guided reading instruction. Having multiple levels ensures that struggling readers can practice decoding and fluency skills at an appropriate pace while advanced readers continue to be challenged. These texts will also support comprehension instruction through retelling, sequencing, and inferencing activities.
2. Phonics and Fluency Tools :
These materials will give students repeated practice in foundational phonics patterns and high-frequency words, leading to increased fluency and confidence in reading aloud. As fluency improves, comprehension naturally strengthens, contributing to measurable growth on benchmark assessments.
3. Interactive Literacy Center Materials:
Hands-on literacy games, vocabulary cards, and task activities will provide engaging opportunities for small-group and independent practice. These centers will allow for ongoing skill reinforcement and differentiated learning during reading rotations, ensuring that each student can progress toward mastery at their own level.
Investing in this literacy project will have a lasting impact on student achievement. By providing the resources and structured support necessary to meet diverse reading needs, we can transform struggling readers into confident, proficient learners. This initiative will not only raise proficiency levels in second grade but also set a strong foundation for future academic success.
